Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign — from his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), to senior adviser Chris LaCivita to Trump himself — is still making a concerted effort to distance itself from Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s detailed far-right blueprint for a second Trump Administration. LaCivita has been quite forceful in claiming that the campaign has nothing to do with Heritage’s proposals.
But many Democrats have pushed back, stressing that the 920-page document was crafted by Trump’s close allies. Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has an entire page on her website that details Project 2025’s proposals.
In a lengthy article published on September 6, The New Republic’s Nina Burleigh argues that Democrats mustn’t let the Trump campaign get away with distancing itself from Project 2025’s extreme proposals — and need to keep hammering them right up until Election Day.

“The risk here — and the movie rank-and-file liberals and Democrats have seen all too many times — is that, because of these disavowals, Democrats will just let the whole thing drop,” Burleigh notes. “But happily so far, that seems not to be the case.”
Burleigh cites Mike Zamore, national director of policy and government affairs at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), as an example of a prominent 2025 opponent who is calling out Trump’s campaign for their Project 2025 connection.
Zamore warned, “It doesn’t matter whose name is on the website — Project 2025 is the Trump-Vance agenda crafted by Trump administration officials as their playbook if they get back in power. And we’ll continue preparing to stop it at every turn.”
Even Trump ally Corey Lewandowski has claimed, during an interview with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, that the campaign has nothing to do with Project 2025.

“The Trump campaign can’t run away fast enough,” Burleigh observes. “Trump claims to know nothing about it. Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump has been hilariously wailing that the project is ‘a hoax’…. But (Project 2025) is also not going anywhere. It is the actual blueprint for what a second Trump Administration will look like. It’s now up to the resistance to resist.”
